The
Cut flower orchid business in Hawaii began to flourish with
the introduction of University of Hawaii cultivars. Produced
from seed, these virus free seedlings grow vigorously and
yield surprising amounts of sprays per year.
Uniformity, long sprays, high flower count, bruise resistance,
ease of packing and record production levels are some of the
reasons why University of Hawaii varieties still continue
to be the mainstay for Hawaii growers. Remaining competitive
in the USA, with associated business costs, (i.e., labor costs)
demands higher production factors but also a higher selling
point.
University
of Hawaii varieties are low in supply and can command a higher
price when properly marketed. Long sprays of orchids, with
their light refreshing fragrance, grace stately homes with
their exquisite understated elegance.
