Broughtonia
sanguinea var. alba crossed to Cattleya guttata created Cattleytonia
Maui Maid. A sibling cross has resulted in a collection of
Ctna. Maui Maid that shows a great deal of uniformity and
subtle variation.
Uniformly ivory in color with round shaped flowers held on
spikes, there seems to be no variation in terms of yielding
pinks or other unexpected colors. The variation occurs in
the shades of ivory and off-whites, some flowers tend to be
expressive of the greenish C. guttata while others might be
a whiter ivory in color. Shapes can range from full round
to slightly slenderized petals and sepals.
The season for blooming seems to be all year round with a
heavier flowering during the winter months into spring. Exceptionally
clean foliage, easy care, multiple blooming seasons, spiking
habit and compact growth make Ctna. Maui Maid a favorite for
many orchid growers and collectors.
The lovely fragrance tends to be delicate, sweet, and some
have a bit of a zest to it. Blossoms look delicate, especially
for it's intricately fringed lip, but the flowers have a significant
amount of substance and last over several weeks.
Breeding with Ctna. Maui Maid has shown amazing fertility
and a significant amount of worthy progeny. The relative simplicity
of Ctna. Maui Maid's genes may contribute to this since it
is a primary hybrid, a cross of two species.
Although Ctna. Maui Maid may not be something new to long
time orchid growers, its enduring characteristics has prompted
me to mention this exquisitely simplistic orchid, along with
the significantly improved individuals found in this sibling
cross.
